Lakes in the Land of Gods, Himachal Pradesh

05 Sep 17 - 00:26

Located in the core Himalayas, the state of Himachal Pradesh is not only famous for its icy mountains, adventure sports and dense foliage, but also popular for many lakes that dot valleys across its lands. There are over a dozen popular lakes, which cover one percent of the area of the state. Fed by snow melting streams and ground water springs, many of these are held pious by Hindus. Devotees have built lavish temples on the periphery of the lakes, which are visited by thousands of pilgrims every year.

Some of these are natural bequests that have existed for millions of years while there are also a few manmade reservoirs. Renuka, the largest natural lake in Himachal Pradesh in Sirmour district is shaped like a reclining woman- the lake is an embodiment of Goddess Renuka. Held sacred by all Hindus for the legend of Renuka's son associated with it, the lake has two temples dedicated to the mother-son duo.

Among mid altitude lakes in Himachal Pradesh, the most popular are the Dal Lake Dharamshala, Rewalsar, and Khajjar Lake. There are many high altitude lakes as well, including Prashar, Nako, Chandratal , SurajTal Lake, Kumarwah Lek, Manumahesh Lake, and others. Manmade reservoirs include Pong Dam (Maharana Pratap Lake, Gobind Sagar and Pandoh Lake.

These lakes are popular tourist spots in Himachal Pradesh. Lakes that have religious importance are visited by devotees, who come here to take a dip in their holy waters. Other lakes offer visitors an opportunity to fish and boat. Encircled by thick forests, these lakes present panoramic views, which are looked by tourists with dumbstruck gaze. Among the high altitude lakes many of them feature a small expanse of water, which remain icebound throughout the winters.

Travel in Himachal Pradesh remains incomplete without exploring these lakes. Among the artificial reservoirs, the most outstanding is the Pong Dam. It was created as recently as 1975 and is the highest earth fill dam in India. Built over River Beas in the wetlands zone of the Shivalik Hills, in Kangra District, the region is also home to a number of migratory birds. It hosts a number of water sports including canoeing, rowing, sailing, water skiing, and swimming.

Lakes in state occupy an important place in the list of tourist places in Himachal Pradesh, and to further boost tourism, the government is making constant efforts to develop the surrounding regions. They have introduced various water sports at many lakes including Pong Dam and Gobind Sagar Lake.
